Guilt and Democracy: Abstract

Individuals are confronted with questions of guilt that actuated in the political orders of authoritarian regimes when their former governments get replaced by democracies. How do perpetrating collectives and individuals deal with their guilt? What are the consequences of failed dealings with guilt for a democratic culture? I argue that guilt is a central category of human existence and that an adequate dealing with guilt is a basic condition to sustain human relations and democratic regimes.

Claudia’s future research draws on European thought to address current issues, such as globalization and its effects. It also aims to explain the relationship between theory and practice, – which remains a central yet under-theorized relation in contemporary political theory.
